Snapslate Privacy Policy
Last updated: November 3, 2026
Snapslate translates text on your iPhone. Your screenshots, photos and the text you translate never leave your device: text recognition and translation run entirely on the iPhone with Apple's built-in frameworks. Snapslate has no accounts, no ads and no tracking.
To find bugs and see which features people use, the app sends a small amount of anonymous technical data, described below. It never contains your text, translations, images or anything that identifies you.
What stays on your iPhone
Screenshots, camera photos, recognized text, translations and your settings. Photos you take in Snapslate are not saved to your library unless you tap Save Image. The translation cache is stored only in the app's own storage and is deleted together with the app.
Usage statistics
Snapslate uses TelemetryDeck (TelemetryDeck GmbH, Germany) to count how the app is used. Each event contains:
- what happened, for example "a screenshot was translated", "a setting was changed" or "a setup step was shown";
- details as fixed values and ranges: the language pair, translation mode, which tab or the shortcut was used, the number of paragraphs and the time it took (as a range), your settings, error codes, and the donation option you chose;
- technical information: app version, iPhone model, iOS version, language and region settings, and the time of the event.
The app identifies your device to TelemetryDeck only by a random identifier that is hashed before it is sent, so neither we nor TelemetryDeck can tell who you are. TelemetryDeck does not store IP addresses.
Crash reports
If the app crashes or a translation fails, Snapslate sends a report to Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.), stored in Sentry's EU data center in Germany. A report contains the error, the place in the code where it happened, the app version, iPhone model and iOS version, and a short list of the app's recent steps, such as "the Camera tab was opened". Reports contain no text, translations, images, screenshots of the app or personal data, and Sentry is set up not to store IP addresses.
Donations
Donations are in-app purchases handled entirely by Apple. We never see your name, Apple Account or payment details. Snapslate only records which donation option was chosen and whether the purchase went through.
Permissions
- Camera: to photograph text you want to translate.
- Adding to Photos: only to save a translated image when you ask for it. Snapslate cannot read your photo library; screenshots you choose are passed to the app by iOS one at a time.
Language packs
Translation languages are downloaded and managed by iOS. Apple handles these downloads under Apple's Privacy Policy.
Legal basis and retention
We process the anonymous data above based on our legitimate interest in keeping the app working and improving it (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). TelemetryDeck and Sentry delete it automatically at the end of their retention periods. Because the data cannot be linked to you, we cannot find, export or delete it for a specific person; if you still have a question or request, write to us.
Children
Snapslate collects no personal data from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new date.
